Most grounds managers only ever see mowing as a monthly invoice. That makes it hard to judge whether the number is fair, and harder still to compare it against any alternative. So before anything else, here is what the Perth market actually charges, drawn from published price guides rather than anyone's sales pitch.
What commercial mowing rates in Perth look like today
Published Perth price guides put commercial mowing at $45 to $60 an hour for an established operator. Larger jobs, the school oval and reserve end of the market, are usually quoted per visit rather than per hour: $120 to $250 or more per visit for work taking 2.5 to 4 hours on site. At the bottom of the market, low-end operators advertise from $20 to $30 an hour, usually with the equipment, insurance cover and scheduling reliability you would expect at that price.
To be clear, these are published market rates for manual mowing contractors, not our prices. We cite them because they are the benchmark any alternative has to beat. They also come with a wide spread: lawn mowing and gardening is a $4.1 billion national industry across more than 17,400 businesses, most of them sole operators, so two quotes for the same site routinely land far apart.
What actually drives the quote
Five factors set most commercial mowing prices. Area is the obvious one: a strata lawn and a full-size oval are different machines and different days. Frequency cuts both ways: a fortnightly schedule is cheaper per month, but each visit takes longer because the grass is longer, and the result looks worse for more of the cycle. Edging and line trimming are pure hand labour, and on sites with long fence lines, paths and garden beds they add substantial time on top of the mowing itself. Green waste matters because catching and carting clippings costs more than mulching them back in; tip fees and truck time end up in the quote either way. And travel is priced into every visit across Perth's sprawl, which is why small jobs carry minimum call-out charges and remote sites carry a premium.
The costs that never make the quote
The invoice is not the whole cost. A contractor mows when the run sheet says, not when the site needs it, so cuts land during school hours, or before the weekend fixture instead of after the growth, and someone on your staff spends time managing the schedule. No-shows and rain weeks compound it: Perth's spring growth does not pause because the crew is behind, so a missed week means double-length grass, a rougher cut and clumped clippings on the next visit. Quality varies with whoever is on the mower that day.
Then there is escalation. Landscape gardeners sit on the national Occupation Shortage List, and more than a quarter of employers who advertise receive no suitable applicants. Scarce labour flows straight into contract prices at every renewal, which is why the mowing line in most WA grounds budgets only ever moves in one direction.
Price the cut, not the visit
The most useful reframe is to stop comparing monthly invoices and start comparing cost per cut. A $150 weekly visit is one cut. The oval looks its best for a day or two, passable mid-week, and shaggy by the weekend fixture, which is exactly when it matters most.

When the contractor is still the right answer
A single small site on a weekly cut is the contractor's home ground. If you have one lawn, a weekly presentation standard is acceptable, and a $120 to $250 visit covers the mowing, edges and green waste in one hit, a robot does not improve your maths and we will tell you so. The same goes for sites dominated by garden beds, edging and hand work: a mower only mows, robotic or not, and the hand work still needs hands.
When the robot wins
The arithmetic flips in four situations. When a surface needs two or more cuts a week, every extra contractor visit is a separate invoice while the robot's daily cut is already included. When one site has multiple fields, a single unit rotates across them on a schedule no crew can hold. When you employ in-house grounds staff, the robot does not replace them; it takes the hours spent on the ride-on and hands them back for edges, gardens, wickets and repairs, which is where a skilled groundsperson earns their keep. And on remote or hard-to-staff sites, from regional towns to mining villages, a robot is often the only option that does not depend on finding labour that is not there.
A worked example: a school with three ovals
Take a Perth school with three ovals on twice-weekly contractor cuts through the growing season. Six visits a week at the published $120 to $250 per-visit range is $720 to $1,500 a week, and each oval still spends most of the week growing out between cuts.
